USS WORDEN (CG-18) HISTORY
The fourth USS Worden (DLG/CG-18), a Leahy-class cruiser, was a ship of the United States Navy named in honor of Admiral John L. Worden. Originally called a “destroyer leader” or frigate, in 1975 she was redesignated a cruiser in the Navy’s ship reclassification. The ship entered service in 1963 and participated in the Vietnam War.
- Commissioning and Early Service:
- USS Worden was commissioned on 3 December 1966.
- The ship was a member of the Leahy-class of guided missile cruisers.
- It was named in honor of Admiral John Lorimer Worden, who served in the U.S. Navy during the American Civil War.
- Vietnam War:
- During the Vietnam War, the USS Worden conducted multiple deployments to the Western Pacific.
- The ship played a role in providing naval gunfire support and participating in various combat operations off the coast of Vietnam.
- 1970s and 1980s:
- In the following years, the USS Worden continued to serve in various roles, including participating in training exercises, patrolling, and providing support for other naval operations.
- The ship was part of the U.S. Seventh Fleet and conducted operations in the Pacific and Indian Oceans.
- Modernization and Decommissioning:
- In the 1980s, the USS Worden underwent a modernization program to improve its capabilities and extend its service life.
- The cruiser was equipped with more advanced weaponry and systems to enhance its combat effectiveness.
- After serving for over two decades, the USS Worden was decommissioned on 31 July 1993.
- Fate:
- Following its decommissioning, the USS Worden was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on 28 January 1994.
- The ship was ultimately disposed of through the Navy’s Ship-Submarine Recycling Program, where it was dismantled and its materials were recycled.
