HISTORY OF HMAS MELBOURNE FFG 05

HMAS Melbourne (FFG-05), one of the Adelaide-class ships, was commissioned in 1992. It has a displacement of 4,100 tons, with a length of 453 feet, a beam of 45 feet, and a draft of 25 feet.

Powered by twin GE LM2500 marine gas turbine units, Melbourne can reach a top speed of 29 knots and has a range of 4,500 nautical miles. It carries a crew of 184 and supports two medium helicopters in its hangar. Melbourne is equipped with various sensors and processing systems, including air and surface search radars. Melbourne has participated in various operations, including deployments to the Persian Gulf, East Timor, and Iraq.

While four Adelaide-class ships were decommissioned in April 2018, Melbourne and HMAS Newcastle remain active, although they show signs of aging.
