HISTORY OF WHYDAH GALLY 70CM
WHYDAH GALLY was a pirate ship that operated in the early 18th century. Originally a slave ship named “Whydah,” it was captured by the notorious pirate Samuel Bellamy in 1717 and renamed “Whydah Gally.” Under Bellamy’s command, the ship became one of the most feared pirate vessels of its time.
WHYDAH GALLY was known for its fast speed and heavily armed crew. It targeted and plundered numerous ships along the Atlantic coast, accumulating a vast amount of treasure. However, its reign as a pirate ship was short-lived. In April 1717, WHYDAH GALLY encountered a violent storm off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and tragically sank, taking with it its valuable loot and most of its crew.
The wreckage of WHYDAH GALLY was discovered in 1984 by underwater explorer Barry Clifford. The site has yielded a wealth of artifacts, providing valuable insights into pirate life and maritime history. The story of WHYDAH GALLY serves as a reminder of the infamous era of piracy and the legends that surround these seafaring outlaws.
