HISTORY OF VARYAG (Варяг)

The Varyag was built at the Cramps shipyard in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, which also produced the battleship Retvizan for the Tsar. It is seen above at Kronstadt shortly after delivery in 1902. Varyag was part of the massive naval buildup that led to the Russo-Japanese War. At the outset of that conflict, the new cruiser was destroyed in battle and scuttled by her crew to avoid capture. The ship was later salvaged by the Japanese and sailed in their fleet as HIJMS Soya for many years.

With its length and arrow-like shape, the Varyag was intended as a commerce raider, swooping down on its prey with terrifying speed. It was originally intended to boil using a Belleville water tube boiler, but the builders lobbied for the Niclausse water tube type to be used instead. The Tsar’s admirals stood up at that decision, as the ship never met speed expectations: designed for more than 25 knots, with 20,000 horsepower engines, rare when exceeding 23 horsepower. did not improve after more than a year of immersion in seawater off the coast of Chemulpo, Korea. During the refit of the ship after being salvaged, extensive rebuilding was necessary. The Japanese started by replacing Niclausse boilers with Miyabara.

The ship’s name describes the Varangians – legendary traders, mercenaries, and pirates who controlled the waterways across the eastern edge of Europe from Finland down to the Black Sea with a series of fortresses in the 5th century. 9 and 10. Of Viking and Slavic origin, they controlled much of the trade with Constantinople during the waning years of the Byzantine Empire and provided much of the military power that maintained the Kievan state (“Rus”). These burly warriors and sailors were the founders of the Russian state. During the Middle Ages and indeed until the 1917 Revolution, Russian nobles calculated their rank based on how close they were to their descent from Rurik the Viking – a legendary Varangian whose descendants had established the Kievan state. Several powerful warships were named for Rurik in the later Russian Navy.
