HISTORY OF USS POWHTAN

USS Powhatan was a steam frigate of the United States Navy that served during the mid-19th century. Commissioned in 1850, the ship was named after the Native American chief Powhatan, father of Pocahontas. USS Powhatan played a significant role in various operations and conflicts, including the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War.

During the Mexican-American War, Powhatan supported the capture of Veracruz and participated in the blockade of Mexican ports. In the Civil War, the ship served as a flagship for the Union Navy and played a vital role in the Union blockade of Confederate ports along the eastern seaboard.

USS Powhatan also had a diplomatic mission, serving as the vessel that transported Commodore Matthew Perry to Japan for his historic expedition that led to the opening of Japan to foreign trade.

After its active service, USS Powhatan was decommissioned in 1889 and eventually sold. Its legacy lives on as a symbol of American naval power and diplomacy during a transformative period in history.
