HISTORY OF USS PHILADELPHIA

USS Philadelphia (CL-41) is a Brooklyn-class light cruiser of the United States Navy. It is the fifth ship to be named after Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In the 1950s, it was introduced into the Brazilian Navy as Almirante Barroso.

Philadelphia visited Charleston, South Carolina on 30 April and hosted President Franklin Delano Roosevelt the first week of May for a cruise to the Caribbean. She departed Los Angeles, California on 2 April 1940 for Pearl Harbor, where she participated in fleet maneuvers until May 194. On 2 August, Philadelphia paid tribute to King George VI, who visited President Truman on the ship Augusta. The ships departed that same day and Philadelphia arrived at Norfolk, Virginia on 7 August.

Philadelphia departed Narragansett Bay for Southampton, England, on 6 September, returning on 25 September as an escort for the former German passenger liner Europa. She made another “Magic Carpet” cruise from New York to Le Havre and back from 5 to 25 December, then arrived at Philadelphia to decommission on 9 January 1946.
