HISTORY OF USS OHIO

USS OHIO is a United States Navy ballistic missile submarine that has played a significant role in the country’s naval history. The Ohio-class submarine, also known as the USS Ohio (SSBN-726), was commissioned in 1981 and was the lead ship of its class. These submarines were designed to carry and launch ballistic missiles armed with nuclear warheads.

Throughout its service, USS OHIO conducted strategic deterrent patrols, maintaining a constant presence beneath the seas to provide a credible nuclear deterrent. The submarine underwent a major conversion in the late 2000s, transforming it into a guided-missile submarine (SSGN). This modification enabled it to carry and deploy a variety of conventional weapons, expanding its capabilities beyond nuclear deterrence.
