HISTORY OF USS INDIANAPOLIS

USS Indianapolis (CA-35) is a Portland-class heavy cruiser of the United States Navy, the second warship of the US Navy to be named after the city of Indianapolis, Indiana. She has a prominent place in history due to the circumstances that led to her sinking, resulting in one of the greatest losses of life at sea in the history of the United States Navy.

On 30 July 1945, shortly after delivering key components of the first combat atomic bomb to the air base at Tinian, the cruiser was struck by a ship-launched torpedo. Japanese submarine I-58, and sank after only 12 minutes. Of the 1,196 crew members present on the ship, about 300 people went down with it. The remaining 800 people faced starvation and shark attacks, as they floated waiting for help with few life rafts and almost no food or water.

The US Navy only learned of the sinking after the survivors were discovered four days later by a regularly patrolling PV-1 Ventura squadron. Only 316 sailors survived. Indianapolis was one of the last American warships sunk by enemy hostilities during World War II; After that, only the submarine USS Bullhead was attacked by Japanese aircraft with depth charges and probably sank on August 6, 1945.
