HISTORY OF USS GERALD R.FORD

USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) is the first ship of the Gerald R. Ford class of aircraft carriers, part of the US Navy’s supercarrier group. When announced by the United States Navy on January 16, 2007, the ship was named after the 38th President of the United States, Gerald R. Ford, who served in the Navy during World War II. light aircraft carrier named USS Monterey in the Pacific Theater.

The keel of the Gerald R. Ford was lowered on September 13, 2009, when Northrop Grumman presided over a ceremonial cutting of a 15-ton iron plate that would be installed into part of the ship’s hull. The ship was inaugurated and launched on September 9, 2013. The schedule calls for the ship to join the US Navy fleet in March 2016 with its first mission in 2019.

Gerald R. Ford will join the fleet and replace the decommissioned USS Enterprise (CVN-65), which retired from service after 51 years in service until December 2012.
