HISTORY OF USS BALAO SUBMARINE

USS Balao (SS/AGSS-285) was a submarine, the lead ship of its namesake class, that served with the United States Navy during World War II. She is the only warship of the United States Navy to be given this name, after a genus of the ironclad fish family. She served throughout World War II, conducting a total of ten patrols, and sinking six Japanese ships with a total tonnage of 31,920 tons.

The ship was decommissioned after the cessation of hostilities in 1946, was remobilized for further Cold War service from 1952 to 1963, and was reclassified as an auxiliary submarine. AGSS-285 in 1960. The ship was eventually sunk as a target off Florida in 1963. Balao was awarded nine battle stars for her World War II service.
