SOVEREIGN OF THE SEA’S HISTORY
Sovereign of the Seas was a warship of the British Navy in the 17th century. She was ordered as a 90-gun first-class ship by the Royal Navy, but when launched was equipped with 102 bronze guns at the king’s request.
It was later renamed Sovereign, and then Royal Sovereign. The ship was launched on 13 October 1637 and served from 1638 until 1697, when a fire burned the ship to the waterline at Chatham.
It was built not to show off technology but actually to strengthen the reputation of the British Crown. Even in its name, it represents a political statement by the king to revive the ancient authority of the English kings as a “lord of the sea”. To honor this reputation, British naval tradition still uses the name HMS Royal Sovereign to name a number of later ships.
