SIGYN’S HISTORY

The Sigyn is a historically significant vessel that was built in Gothenburg in the year 1887. It holds distinction as the last surviving wooden barque that was utilized for transoceanic trade.

Initially, Sigyn spent its first decade navigating the Atlantic primarily engaged in the trade of timber. Notably, in 1897, it embarked on a notable journey to Bangkok. After the turn of the 20th century, the ship’s voyages were primarily within European waters.

Sigyn was purchased and subsequently opened to the public on June 3rd of the same year. It was a pioneering endeavor, being among the few museum ships in existence globally and notably the first in Finland.

The vessel underwent partial hull renewal between 1971 and 1972 at the Suomenlinna shipyard, although financial constraints delayed its reopening until 1979. Over time, by 1994, Sigyn’s hull had weakened due to prolonged stress. To address this issue, a floating dock named “Loke” was constructed in 1994. Subsequently, between 1998 and 2001, comprehensive hull renovations were carried out to ensure the structural integrity and preservation of the Sigyn ship.
