HISTORY

RS “Langesund” (RS 2) is a former lifeboat that was built for Langesund Kreds til Skibbrudnes Redning in 1893 by Thor Martin Jenssen, Porsgrund Baadbyggeri in Knardalstrand.

A storm in Langesundsbukta on 12 February 1892, where Colin Archer pilot boats rescued fishermen, made many believe that it was best to invest in safe Archer-type pilot boats as a rescue service. Widows of fishermen who died received help with fundraising and started Langesund Kreds til Skibbrudnes Redning, a local branch of the Rescue Society in the area that is today called Grenland.

Langesund krets started construction of their skate half a year before the Rescue Society when they held a construction and tender competition first. RS “Langesund” therefore became the first Norwegian skate in rescue service.

The boat, like the other lifeboats, was built “sink-free”, i.e. with a double hull of solid water-tight trim (plank on the inside of the frames) and a water-tight door.
