RRS DISCOVERY’S HISTORY

The RRS DISCOVERY is a historic British ship famous for its expeditions to Antarctica. Launched in 1901, it was specially designed and built for scientific research and exploration in extreme polar conditions. The ship’s most notable expedition was the British National Antarctic Expedition (1901-1904), led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott.

During this expedition, the RRS DISCOVERY ventured deep into the Antarctic regions, collecting scientific data, mapping uncharted territories, and conducting groundbreaking research. It also served as a base for numerous pioneering expeditions, including the first successful journey to the South Magnetic Pole.

After its remarkable Antarctic expeditions, the RRS DISCOVERY continued to serve as a research vessel and patrol ship. Today, it is preserved as a museum ship in Dundee, Scotland, where visitors can explore its decks and learn about the challenges faced by early polar explorers.
