HISTORY OF ROMA

Roma was a battleship of the Regia Marina (Royal Italian Navy). Named after the city of Rome, this was the third battleship of the Littorio class and one of the most advanced battleships of the Royal Italian Navy during World War II.

Roma was commissioned on 14 June 1942, but fuel shortages in Italy at that time prevented her from sailing for combat; Instead, along with Littorio and Vittorio Veneto, Roma was operated as an anti-aircraft fortress in several Italian cities. While anchored at La Spezia, the ship was damaged twice by Allied bombers in June 1943. While transiting the Strait of Bonifacio, the Italian fleet was attacked by a group of Dornier Do 217 aircraft equipped with Fritz.
