HISTORY

RMS Mauretania (also known as “Maury”) was a passenger liner built by Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson at Wallsend, Tyne and Wear for the British shipping line Cunard, and launched on 20 December 1906. At the time, it was the largest and fastest ship in the world. Mauretania is popular with many passengers. Upon receiving the Blue Ribbon for the fastest Atlantic crossing in early 1907, Mauretania held the speed record for twenty-two years.

The ship was named after Mauretania, the name of a Roman territory on the northwest coast of Africa, and had nothing to do with Mauritania. Similar naming was also done with the Lusitania. This ship is named after a territory in the northern region of Mauretania.

In 1897, Germany’s SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse became the world’s largest and fastest ship. With a speed of 41 km/h, this ship won the Blue Ribbon from two Cunard ships, Campania and Lucania. At the same time, International Mercantile Marine Co. of tycoon J. P. Morgan is trying to acquire maritime commercial activities, and has won a large British shipping company, White Star.
