In August 2000, the ship arrived in the Barents Sea to oversee the largest exercise since the fall of the Soviet Union in the past decade. It was designated as the target of the underground K-141 (Oscar II class) moving to evade when contact with Kursk was lost.

It was later discovered that the submarine had suffered a torpedo explosion that killed all 118 crew members. And the ship Pyotr Velikiy guarded near the area where the submarine sank for later salvage.
