HISTORY OF PYOTR VELIKIY (Петр Великий)

Pyotr Velikiy (Russian: Пётр Великий) is the fourth Kirov-class cruiser of the Russian Navy. Originally named Yuri Andropov (Russian: Юрий Андропов) for Yuri Andropov, former General Secretary of the Communist Party, the ship’s name was changed after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The Russian name for this type of ship is “heavy missile cruiser”, but Western defense commentators invented the term “battle cruiser” to describe them as combat warships. The world’s largest body of water. Pyotr Velikiy is the flagship of the Northern Fleet.

The ship’s construction was heavily affected by economic problems before and after the collapse of the Soviet Union and she did not enter service until 1998, 12 years after work began. It was later renamed Pyotr Velikiy, Russian for Peter the Great. Pyotr Velikiy is known to have carried two flag numbers during his service; “183” and now “099”.
