HISTORY OF USS PENNSYLVANIA

USS PENNSYLVANIA was a battleship of the United States Navy that served during World War II. Commissioned in 1916, it was the lead ship of its class and played a significant role in naval operations throughout the war.

USS PENNSYLVANIA saw action in the Pacific theater, participating in major campaigns such as the Battle of Leyte Gulf and the Battle of Okinawa. It provided crucial gunfire support and served as the flagship for Admiral William Halsey Jr.

After the war, USS PENNSYLVANIA underwent modernization and continued to serve in various capacities. It was used as a target ship during atomic bomb tests in the Bikini Atoll in 1946 and later became a training ship for naval personnel.

In 1959, USS PENNSYLVANIA was decommissioned and ultimately sold for scrap in 1959. Despite its fate, the ship’s service and contributions during World War II remain significant.
