HMS WARRIOR’S HISTORY

HMS Warrior was a pioneering warship that revolutionized naval architecture in the mid-19th century.

• Construction: HMS Warrior was the first iron-hulled, armored battleship, marking a significant advancement in naval technology and launched in 1860. It was powered by both sail and steam propulsion.
• Service: Warrior was built to counter the threat posed by armored French warships. It served in the Royal Navy as a deterrent to potential adversaries and was primarily used for coastal defense and as a flagship.
• Notable Features: Warrior boasted an iron hull covered with thick iron plates, making it one of the most heavily armored warships of its time.
• Legacy: As naval technology rapidly advanced, ships like Warrior became obsolete relatively quickly. Warrior was eventually relegated to reserve status and served as a storage hulk.
• Preservation: In 1979, HMS Warrior was restored and is now a museum ship docked at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard in England. Visitors can explore the ship and learn about its history and significance in naval architecture.
