CHARLES MORGAN’S HISTORY
The Charles W. Morgan was an iconic American whaling ship built in 1841 in New Bedford, Massachusetts. It is one of the last remaining wooden whaling ships from the 19th century and has an important place in maritime history.
- Construction: The ship was built by Jethro and Zachariah Hillman at the Jethro Hillman shipyard.
Whaling career: The Charles W. Morgan embarked on its first voyage in 1841. It completed 37 voyages over 80 years, primarily engaging in the whaling industry. During its years of operation, it traveled around the world chasing whales for oil, which was very valuable at the time. - Conservation: As the whaling industry declined in the late 19th century due to the discovery of alternative energy sources, the ship was decommissioned in 1921. And the ship was saved from destruction thanks to the efforts of Charles W. Morgan, a descendant of the original owner, who purchased the ship with the intention of preserving it.
- Museum ship: The ship was eventually donated to what is now known as the Mystic Seaport Museum in Mystic, Connecticut, in 1941.
- Historical Significance: As one of the last remaining whaling ships of its era, the Charles W. Morgan represents an important part of American maritime history. Its preservation allows visitors to better understand the whaling industry, the lives of sailors and the importance of maritime trade in the 19th century.
