ARA LIBERTAD’S HISTORY

ARA Libertad is a training ship of the Argentine Navy.

• Structure and purpose: ARA Libertad was built in the 1950s in Argentina as a sail training ship for the Argentine Navy. It was built to serve as a training ship for naval cadets.
• First voyage: The ship was launched on May 30, 1956 and made her maiden voyage in 1963.
• Technical details: ARA Libertad is a tall ship, with three masts, steel hull and fully equipped. It is equipped with many modern navigation technologies but relies heavily on traditional sailing techniques for training purposes.
• Diplomatic incident: In 2012, the ship was involved in a diplomatic incident when it was detained in Ghana. A financial fund management company sought to seize the ship due to Argentina’s default. It took several weeks and legal negotiations before the ship was released and returned to Argentina.
