HISTORY
The MV Kalakala was a famous ferryboat that operated in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. Here’s a brief history of this iconic vessel:
- Launch and Design: The Kalakala was launched in 1935 and was originally known as the Peralta. It was built in Oakland, California, and was initially a ferry serving the San Francisco Bay area. The vessel’s unique design, often described as “Art Deco” or “Streamline Moderne,” set it apart from other ferries of its time. It featured a sleek, futuristic appearance with a streamlined hull and distinctive styling.
- Conversion and Renaming: In 1935, the Peralta was purchased by the Puget Sound Navigation Company (known as the Black Ball Line), based in Washington state. The ferry was extensively renovated and renamed the Kalakala, a Chinook term that means “flying bird” or “bird with no wings.”
- Service in the Pacific Northwest: The Kalakala became an iconic symbol of the Pacific Northwest and operated primarily in Puget Sound, connecting Seattle with various locations in Washington state. It was known for its unique appearance and was often called the “Silver Slug” due to its shiny aluminum skin.
- Innovations and Upgrades: The Kalakala featured several innovations, including a rotating turntable mechanism at the bow that allowed it to load and unload vehicles more efficiently.
