HISTORY OF MUSASHI

Musashi, one of the leading battleships of the Yamato class, was secretly built from March 1938 to August 1942. Designed with the goal of dealing with many enemy warships at once. Musashi has a length of 263 meters and a total tonnage of up to 71,000 tons, making it one of the largest battleships in history. This was only surpassed by the American aircraft carriers developed after World War II.
Each Yamato-class warship is equipped with nine 460 mm caliber gunboats, placed on three large turrets. After an upgrade in 1944, Musashi was also supplemented with 6 155 mm guns, 24 127 mm guns and 130 25 mm anti-aircraft guns. However, despite reaching full combat readiness in January 1943, Musashi rarely participated directly in battles and was often used to transport troops and supplies.
On May 17, 1943, Musashi was sent to the northern Pacific with two light aircraft carriers, nine destroyers, and two cruisers to support Japanese troops on Attu Island in the Aleutian Islands, is being attacked by America. However, when the island was lost before they could reach it, Musashi and the other ships had to turn back.
On September 18, 1943, Musashi left port again with an escort of three leading warships to deal with the American attack on Eniwetok and Brown Islands in the Marshall Islands. However, they encountered no enemy during the attack and had to turn back within just a week. A month later, Musashi continued to sail with a powerful fleet to prevent American aircraft carriers from attacking Wake Island, but they eventually returned without firing a single shot.
Musashi was sunk by approximately 19 torpedoes and 17 bombs from American carrier aircraft on 24 October 1944 during the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
The ship’s wreck was found by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen and his team of researchers in March 2015.
