USS CONSTELLATION PAINTED

USS Constellation was a 38-gun frigate and the first ship commissioned in the United States Navy. She has the distinction of being the first United States Navy ship to put to sea and the first United States Navy ship to engage, defeat, and capture an enemy ship. Constellation was one of six frigates originally authorized for construction under the Admiralty Act of 1794.

The original USS Constellation was built in 1797 by Joshua Humphreys and was broken up for scrap in 1853 at the Gosport Navy Yard in Norfolk, Virginia at the same time as the second USS Constellation. In the second half of the 20th Century, the 1854 version was believed to be the 1797 version as the city of Baltimore promoted the ship as the original and some naval historians believed that the Baltimore was a rebuilt original. The paper “Fouled Anchors: The Constellation Question Answer”, by Dana M. Wegner et al., published by the Navy’s David Taylor Research Center in 1991, concluded that they were different ships. Compelling evidence was presented during the ship’s refit in Baltimore that ended in 1999, in which all evidence pointed to the construction of a completely new 1850s-era warship rather than a ship in 1797
