MARIE CLARISSE’S HISTORY
The Marie Clarisse is a famous wooden sailing ship, built in 1923 by James H. Harding in Shelburne, Nova Scotia. Originally named the Archie F. Mackenzie, she was used to transport goods between Nova Scotia and Newfoundland from 1942.
In 1974, she began sailing on the St. Lawrence River and sank in the Port of Québec in 1976. After seven months in the water, she was raised and taken to the Isle-aux-Coudres shipyard in Charlevoix for restoration in 1977. She was later renamed the Marie Clarisse and used for various purposes, including as a cruise ship on the Saguenay Fjords and a training ship.
Since 2015, the Marie Clarisse has been housed at the Charlevoix Maritime Museum.
