he Maersk Triple E class is a series of large, fuel-efficient container ships designed as a successor to the Mærsk E-class. On June 2, 2011, Maersk awarded Daewoo Shipbuilding two contracts worth a total of USD 3.8 billion to build 20 of these vessels. The name “Triple E” comes from the three design principles: “Economy of scale, Energy efficiency, and Environmental improvement.”

These ships are 400 meters (1,312 ft) long and 59 meters (194 ft) wide. Although only 3 meters (9.8 ft) longer and 4 meters (13 ft) wider than the E-class, the Triple E can carry an additional 2,500 containers. With a draft of 14.5 meters (48 ft), the ships are unable to use most American ports or transit the Panama Canal. However, they can pass through the Suez Canal when operating between Europe and Asia.

A notable feature of this class is its ultra-long-stroke, two-stroke diesel engines, each producing 32 megawatts (43,000 horsepower). The vessels are powered by two propellers and have a design speed of 19 knots (35 km/h; 22 mph). The Triple E design earned Maersk the “Sustainable Ship Operator of the Year” award in July 2011.

Maersk plans to deploy these vessels on routes between Europe and Asia. The Euro-Asia trade represents the company’s largest market, with 100 ships already serving this route. The addition of the Triple E class is expected to further strengthen Maersk’s market share in Euro-Asia trade.
