KNOCK NEVIS

HISTORY

KNOCK NEVIS, formerly known as the “Seawise Giant,” was a commercial supertanker and the largest ship ever built. Constructed in 1979, the vessel had a length of 458.45 meters (1,504 feet) and a deadweight tonnage of 564,763 tons. It was originally built to transport crude oil.

Throughout its history, KNOCK NEVIS went through various ownership changes and was operated by different shipping companies. It underwent several modifications and upgrades to improve its efficiency and comply with international maritime regulations.

In 2004, the ship was renamed “Knock Nevis” and converted into a floating storage and offloading (FSO) unit. It served as a stationary storage facility for crude oil off the coast of Qatar.

In 2009, the vessel was retired from service and subsequently sold for scrap. It was taken to a shipbreaking yard in India, where it was dismantled in 2010.

The size and historical significance of KNOCK NEVIS made it a notable landmark in the maritime industry. Although it is no longer in existence, its legacy as one of the largest ships ever built remains.
