The original Jeanie Johnston played a crucial role during the Great Irish Famine, making 16 voyages between 1848 and 1855 to transport Irish emigrants to North America. Remarkably, no lives were lost on these voyages, a stark contrast to many other “coffin ships” of the time. This was largely due to the ship’s captain, James Attridge, who ensured the ship was not overloaded, and the presence of a qualified doctor on board.
