HMS VICTORY’S HISTORY
- Construction: Launched in 1765, HMS Victory was a 104-gun first-rate ship of the line built at Chatham Dockyard, England. It was one of the largest warships of its time.
- Service Record: Victory had an illustrious career, serving in numerous battles and campaigns. One of its most famous engagements was the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, under the command of Admiral Horatio Nelson.
- Post-Trafalgar Service: After the battle, Victory continued in service, often serving as a flagship and later as a harbor ship and a training vessel.
- Preservation: In 1922, HMS Victory was moved to a dry dock at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, where it remains today. It has been meticulously preserved and is one of the oldest naval ships still in commission.
- Legacy: HMS Victory stands as a symbol of British naval power and victory, particularly at the Battle of Trafalgar. It is also a popular tourist attraction and museum, allowing visitors to explore and learn about naval history and life aboard an 18th-century warship.
