The HMS Beagle was a Royal Navy ship that gained immense historical significance due to its second voyage (1831–1836) captained by Robert FitzRoy and carrying the young naturalist Charles Darwin.

• Construction: Launched in 1820, the Beagle initially served routine naval duties before its famous voyage.
• Voyage (1831–1836): Under FitzRoy’s command, the Beagle embarked on a surveying expedition around South America. Darwin’s presence as a naturalist was pivotal. During the voyage, Darwin collected specimens, made observations, and studied various wildlife and geological formations, particularly in the Galapagos Islands.
• Scientific Legacy: Darwin’s observations and findings during the voyage significantly influenced his theory of evolution by natural selection, culminating in his book “On the Origin of Species.”
• Service: After its famous voyage, the Beagle continued in various surveying roles until it was sold out of service in 1870 and eventually broken up in 1877.
