HMS ARK ROYAL ’S HISTORY

HMS Ark Royal was an aircraft carrier of the Royal Navy that served during World War II. Designed in 1934 to comply with the restrictions of the Washington Naval Treaty, Ark Royal was built by Cammell Laird at Birkenhead, England, and completed in November 1938.

Ark Royal’s design differed from that of previous aircraft carriers. It was the first ship to have hangars and a flight deck that were an integral part of the hull, rather than an add-on or part of the superstructure. Designed to carry a large number of aircraft, it had two hangar decks.

Ark Royal saw action in many important campaigns during World War II, including the Norwegian Campaign, the Mediterranean Campaign and the Baltic Treaty Campaign.
It played a key role in sinking the German aircraft carrier Graf Spee during the Battle of the River Plate in December 1939.
Ark Royal also took part in the attack on Taranto in November 1940, bombing the Italian fleet anchored in the harbour.
In November 1941, Ark Royal was torpedoed by the German submarine U-81 and sank off Gibraltar.

HMS Ark Royal was an important aircraft carrier of the Royal Navy and played a significant role in the Allied war effort. Its design had a considerable influence on the development of later aircraft carriers.
