HECTOR’S HISTORY

Journey: Hector made his famous voyage in 1773, departing from Loch Broom, Scotland to Pictou, Nova Scotia. On board were about 189 Scottish immigrants, mainly from the Scottish Highlands and Hebrides, who were seeking a new life in North America due to economic hardship and other factors.

Itinerary: The trip lasted about 11 weeks and was challenging due to cramped conditions and rough seas. The passengers endured harsh conditions on the ship, including storms and disease, before reaching Pictou Harbor in September 1773.

Heritage: Today Hector’s arrival in Pictou is commemorated by a replica of the ship, which serves as a museum and heritage site in Pictou, Nova Scotia. Visitors can explore the replica ship and learn about the hardships and experiences of the first Scottish immigrants to Canada.
