ELISSA’S HISTORY
Construction: Built in 1877 in Aberdeen, Scotland, Elissa was a three-masted iron-hulled sailing ship. Originally named “Puritan”, she served primarily as a cargo ship, transporting a variety of goods, including cotton, to various ports around the world.
Ownership: The ship changed hands several times throughout her years of service, serving under different flags and owners.
Conservation: In the 1970s, Elissa was rediscovered in a state of disrepair by a group of conservationists in a scrap yard in Greece.
The Galveston Historical Foundation in Texas purchased the ship and launched a massive restoration effort. After extensive restoration work, Elissa became an important part of the Texas Seaport Museum in Galveston, Texas.
It has been restored to its late 19th-century appearance and has become a living testament to the age of sail, allowing visitors to experience maritime history firsthand.
The Elissa is notable for being one of the few remaining 19th-century tall ships still sailing today.
