EL PRIMERO STEAM YACHT’S HISTORY

El Primero is a steam yacht built in 1893. The ship was once considered one of the most luxurious yachts on the American West Coast and was one of the few steam yachts operated on Puget Sound. This yacht has been converted to diesel engines but has remained in operation since 2010.

El Primero (built in San Francisco, California) was the first steam yacht built on the west coast of the United States. The yacht has an auxiliary sail rig. The steam engine has a capacity of 225 horsepower, bringing the ship to a maximum speed of 13.5 knots/hour.

In 2017, El Primero underwent a refit at the Boat Haven Yard in Port Townsend. The main goal is to restore as many original features as possible. Some areas, such as the dining room, did not need restoration because it remained unchanged since the ship was launched.
