CUTTY SARKS’S HISTORY

Construction: Designed by Hercules Linton and built in 1869 in Dumbarton, Scotland. The Cutty Sark was one of the last and fastest tea cutters built during the tugboat era.

Trade: The Cutty Sark mainly transported tea from China to England and then carried various goods globally, competing fiercely with other ships to transport goods quickly.

Record-breaking speed: The Cutty Sark’s notable event was its race against the Thermopylae, another famous tug, to transport the season’s first tea from China to London in 1872.

Later years and conservation: Cutty Sark was sold in 1895 and reused for different purposes. The ship changed hands several times, serving as a training vessel and a floating museum until purchased by the Cutty Sark Conservation Society in the 1950s. Restoration efforts began and in 1957, The ship found her permanent home in Greenwich, London, where she became a museum ship.
