CSS ALABAMA’S HISTORY

Construction: CSS Alabama was a screw warship built for the Confederate Navy during the American Civil War. The ship was built in secret by John Laird Sons and Company in Liverpool, England.

Operating as a Commerce Raider: Under the command of Captain Raphael Semmes, the Alabama was outfitted as a commerce raider. She set sail on her maiden voyage from England in August 1862 and began a highly successful raiding campaign against Union merchant ships in the Atlantic and other oceans.

Remarkable: The CSS Alabama had many successful encounters with Union merchant ships, capturing or destroying more than 60 vessels during her two-year career. One of the most famous engagements occurred on June 19, 1864, when the CSS Alabama engaged the Union warship USS Kearsarge. The last Alabama was sunk in this battle.

End of service: During the Battle of Cherbourg, the USS Kearsarge defeated the CSS Alabama, causing it to sink off the French coast.

Heritage: The CSS Alabama’s successful career as a commerce raider and her eventual dramatic sinking by the USS Kearsarge made her a symbol of Confederate naval power during the Civil War.

The wreck of the CSS Alabama was discovered in the 1980s off the coast of Cherbourg, France, and archaeological efforts have been undertaken to study and preserve the site.
