CHINESE JUNK’S HISTORY

A junk (Chinese: 船, chuán) is a type of Chinese sailing ship with fully battened sails. Classical boats were built of softwood (although after the 17th century, teak was used in Guangdong) with the exterior being built first. The hull has a horseshoe-shaped stern supporting a high deck. The bottom of the boat is as flat as a boat floating on a river without a keel (similar to a sampan), thanks to which the boat relies on a daggerboard, leeboard or a very large rudder to prevent the boat from sliding sideways in the water. Internal bulkheads are characteristic of boats, providing internal compartments and strengthening the vessel.
