HISTORY OF SKIPJACK GERTRUDE WANDS
The Skipjack, a distinctive type of boat, emerged in the late 19th century. Oyster dredging, previously banned in 1820, was once again permitted in 1865. The existing vessels were ill-suited for this purpose, leading to the development of the bugeye, a modified version of the log canoe, better equipped to navigate the shallow oyster beds.
Originally, the bugeye featured a log hull. However, due to diminishing timber resources and rising construction costs, boat builders turned to other designs. They adapted the sharpies used in Long Island Sound by increasing the beam and simplifying the sail plan. This modification resulted in a more cost-effective and straightforward construction process, quickly making it the predominant oystering vessel in the bay.
The origin of the name “skipjack” is a topic of ongoing debate. Some suggest it might have been derived from the term New England fishermen used for the bonita, known as the “flying fish.” Others propose that it could be linked to an archaic English term signifying an “inexpensive yet useful servant.”
At one point, it’s estimated that around 2,000 skipjacks were produced, but today there are only about 40, with less than half of them actively used for fishing. The future of the skipjack fleet remains uncertain, as efforts persist to restore the productivity of the oyster beds.
In recognition of its historical significance, the Skipjack was designated as the official state boat of Maryland in 1985.
