HISTORY

The Cap San Diego was constructed in 1961 in Hamburg, Germany. It was one of a series of six identical cargo ships built for the German shipping company Hamburg Süd. It was named after the city of San Diego in California, USA.

The Cap San Diego primarily operated as a general cargo ship. It was used for transporting a wide range of goods, including containerized cargo, steel, and other commodities. It was known for its distinctive appearance, featuring a red funnel and a white hull.

At various points in its history, the Cap San Diego was also used as a passenger ship for leisure cruises. It was equipped with cabins and facilities to accommodate passengers during these cruises.

In 1986, the Cap San Diego was retired from active cargo service. It was then transformed into a museum ship and permanently docked in Hamburg. Today, it serves as a floating museum and a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can explore the ship to learn about its history and the maritime industry.
