BOUNTY’S HISTORY

• Construction: The HMS Bounty was originally a three-masted merchant vessel built in 1784 for transporting breadfruit plants from Tahiti to the West Indies. The ship was about 90 feet long and was originally named Bethia. It was later acquired by the British Royal Navy and renamed HMS Bounty.
• Journey to the Pacific: In 1787, under the command of Lieutenant William Bligh, the HMS Bounty sailed to Tahiti to collect breadfruit trees. After leaving Tahiti in 1789 with the collected breadfruit trees, a mutiny broke out on board, led by Fletcher Christian, the captain’s mate. On April 28, 1789, Christian and a group of mutineers took control of the ship, leaving Bligh and 18 loyal crew adrift in a small open boat.
• After the mutiny: mBligh and his loyal crew miraculously survived a grueling 3,618 nautical mile journey in an open boat and reached safety in Timor, a Dutch settlement Lan. The Bounty’s fate was sealed after the mutiny. Some rebels, including Christian, burned the ship to prevent it from being discovered and to avoid detection by passing ships.
• Heritage and popular culture: The story of the Bounty Rebellion has become legendary and has been adapted into many books, films and other media, capturing the imagination of people worldwide .
