BON HOMME RICHARD’S HISTORY
- Construction and Origin: Originally a French merchant ship named Duc de Duras, it was later purchased by the United States in 1779, under the command of John Paul Jones, a prominent American naval officer.
- American Revolutionary War: The Bon Homme Richard played a crucial role in American naval history during the Revolutionary War, notably in the Battle of Flamborough Head on September 23, 1779. Despite facing a more powerful adversary, John Paul Jones famously declared, “I have not yet begun to fight!” during the intense combat. After a fierce and brutal engagement, the Bon Homme Richard managed to capture the Serapis.
- Legacy: However, the Bon Homme Richard was heavily damaged during the battle and subsequently sank due to the extensive damage sustained. Jones and his crew transferred to the captured Serapis and sailed it back to the Netherlands for repairs.
