BATAVIA’S HISTORY

The Batavia was a large ship owned by the Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie – VOC) and built in the town of Amsterdam in 1628. The Batavia was an East Indiaman ship, designed to withstand traveled long distances and carried large quantities of precious goods such as spices, silk, and precious stones.

Design: The Batavia’s bow and stern are decorated with intricate ornaments and motifs, making the ship gorgeous and impressive. The hull is approximately 57 meters (187 feet) long and 7.5 meters (25 feet) wide. The Batavia had three masts and a fairly complex sail net consisting of many square and offset sails, controlled to suit specific wind and sea conditions.

In 1629, BATAVIA had the ironic fate of running aground on the Australian coast during its first voyage to sea. At that time, a riot and massacre occurred on the ship, killing hundreds of innocent people, including children. And that was just to satisfy the greed of a group of people who had previously planned to control and appropriate assets on the ship. The tragic event on the Batavia boat became one of the dark pages of history with human cruelty and crime when faced with crisis and danger.
