HISTORY INFORMATION OF OHIO CLASS SUBMARINE

The Ohio-class submarine is a class of nuclear-powered submarines used by the United States Navy, designed primarily for strategic deterrence and strike missions. It is the largest submarine class ever built for the U.S. Navy and serves as a critical component of the nation’s nuclear triad.

First commissioned in 1981 (USS Ohio, SSBN-726).
Originally, 18 Ohio-class submarines were built between 1976–1997.
After the START I treaty, four submarines were converted into SSGNs instead of being decommissioned.
The remaining 14 SSBNs continue their strategic nuclear deterrence role.
