WASA WITH LIGHTS ’S HISTORY
The Wasa (or Vasa) was a Swedish warship built between 1626 and 1628 at the request of King Gustavus Adolphus. It was one of the largest and heaviest warships of its time, heavily armed and elaborately decorated with hundreds of sculptures.
However, on its maiden voyage on 10 August 1628, the Wasa sank after only traveling about 1,300 metres. The main cause was an unbalanced design, which caused the ship to capsize in strong winds.
The Wasa wreck has now been salvaged and preserved at the Vasa Museum in Stockholm, Sweden, becoming one of the country’s most popular tourist attractions.
