BELLE OF LOUISVILLE STEAM SHIP’S HISTORY

The Belle of Louisville is a symbol of the city of Louisville, Kentucky, United States. Built in 1914 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, under the name Idlewild, this boat was originally used for cruises along the Ohio and Mississippi rivers.

In 1931, the boat was purchased and renamed Avalon. In 1962, the city of Louisville purchased the boat and renamed it the Belle of Louisville, and began using it for tours and events on the Ohio River.
