SS AMERICA’S HISTORY

SS America is one of the legendary and especially important ships in the history of shipping.

SS America was built at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company in Newport News, Virginia, United States. The vessel was launched and entered service in 1940.

Before and during World War II, SS America operated as a cruise ship primarily on the North Atlantic route, transporting passengers between Europe and the United States. During World War II, SS America was converted into a military transport ship and participated in many missions transporting troops and war goods. After the end of World War II, the SS America was repurposed for tourist purposes and transported passengers on various routes, including to the Caribbean and Africa.

After that, SS America was less exploited due to various reasons such as competition from airplanes, trains, and new airline routes. Ultimately, the ship was sold for recycling in France. But during the process of being towed back, it sank off the island of Fuerteventura, Canary Islands in 1994.

Currently, the SS America lies underwater off the island of Fuerteventura.

SS America is considered a symbol of the history of shipping and sea travel. Even though it has sunk, it is still an important part of the heroic history of the cruise industry.
