History

D/S OSTER was a ocean line that plied the Norwegian coast in the late 19th and into the 20th century. The OSTER was built in 1908 at Christiansands Mæk. Værksted (in Kristiansand, southern Norway). The ship is 106.1 feet long, 21.7 feet wide and can carry 265 passengers. It operated in Bergen for many years. This is the largest ship connecting the northern part of Hordaland with the city of Bergen.

This ship was also built as an icebreaker. Because the fjords in this area always freeze in winter and leave people isolated. In 1915, it was extended to 118.6 feet, with passenger capacity increased to 312.

D/S OSTER and its sister ships play an important role in the movement of goods and passengers in this region. However, by 1964, the introduction of more modern vehicles gradually replaced the OSTER. The ship was sold off, then rebuilt as the “M/S Vaka” and disappeared from history – for a time. Until 1996, some enthusiasts sought to keep the old ship and restore it with a more modern engine.
