GORCH FOCK II’S HISTORY

Structure and setting: Gorch Fock II (Gorch Fock) was launched in 1958 to replace the original Gorch Fock, a sailing ship used by the German Navy for training purposes. The ship was named after German author and poet Johann Kinau, who wrote under the pen name “Gorch Fock”.

Training ship: Gorch Fock II was specifically designed and built as a sailing training ship for the German Navy. Its main purpose is to train naval cadets in seamanship, navigation and sailing skills.

Activities: The ship was actively involved in training several generations of German naval officers and sailors. She conducts regular training cruises, participates in international tall ship events and races and represents Germany in various maritime festivals worldwide.

Refurbishments: Over the years, Gorch Fock II has undergone a number of modernizations and refurbishments to keep her operational and up to date while maintaining the appearance and training capabilities of the classic sailing ship.
Cultural significance: The ship has cultural significance in Germany and beyond, as a symbol of maritime tradition, naval education and national pride.
