HISTORY of French battleship Richelieu

Richelieu was a battleship of the French Navy, the lead ship of her class. She served in the opening stages of World War II on the side of Vichy France, especially in defense against the Allied landings at Dakar; and then with the Allies in the Indian Ocean during 1944-1945. It was involved in the transfer of French troops back to Indochina in late 1945 and served until the 1960s.

As the Battle of France worsened with German forces overcoming French defenses at the Somme and Aisne, Richelieu, under the command of Captain Marzin, hastily left Brest on 18 June. 1940, narrowly escaping the approaching German forces. On September 24, Richelieu fought against Allied naval forces at the Battle of Dakar.

After French forces in West Africa joined the Allies in November 1942, it was decided that Richelieu would be rearmed with the help of the United States. Richelieu departed Dakar on 30 January 1943 with the cruiser Montcalm and arrived on 11 February for a refit at the New York Navy Yard.

From 25 May 1956, she was used as a comfort ship at Brest, then placed in reserve in 1958. Richelieu was sold for scrap on 16 January 1968, and scrapped. by Cantieri Navali Santa Maria in Genoa in September 1968. One of its main guns is currently on display in the port of Brest.
